Cholesterol and Glucose Levels are reduced by Dietary Fibre
The Dietary Fibre has physical properties such as water holding
capacity and binding capacity.
The physiological properties include hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic
effects
The Dietary fibre adds bulk to the diet and increases transit time of
food in the gut .
The Insoluble Dietary Fibre helps to reduce Constipation and Diverticulosis
Soluble Dietary Fibre ( SDF ) –
1 The Soluble Dietary Fbre is effective in reducing the Coronary Heart Disease ( CHD)
2 Type 2 diabetes . non insulin dependent diabetes mellitus ( NIDDM)
3 Obesity
Mechanism of Hypoglycemic effects of SDF are –
1 SDF binds to large quantity of water . It delays the Secretion of GI tract to
reduce digestion of food material and delaying the glucose absorption.
2 As a result of delayed absorption of glucose secretion of insulin the
pancreas is also delayed by circulating levels of insulin.
3 The decreased circulating levels of insulin activate the receptors in target
organs which will result in increased insulin sensitivity.
Mechanism of Action of SDF on reduced CHD hypolipidemic or hypo-
cholesterolemic effects –
1 It delays digestion of food resulting delay in cholesterol absorption.
2 It binds to bile salts and prevents its reabsorption resulting in a
decrease in circulating levels of cholesterol.
3 It removes bile acids and neutral steroids by excretion through faeces.
4 The SDF yields short chain fatty acids ( SCFA ) due to fermentation.
in the colon . The SCFA are carried to liver by bile circulation and inhibit
cholesterol biosynthesis.
Recent Studies –
1 Fenugreek Seeds have high levels of Insoluble Dietary Fibre IDF )
48.6 gm % and Soluble Dietary Fibre ( SDF ) 20.0 gm %.
It is very effective in reducing the blood glucose and cholesterol level
2 The total Dietary Fibre ( TDF ) contributes bulk to diet.
It help in reducing energy intake and thus useful for reducing obesity
Adverse Effects Of Dietary Fibre
Dietary Fibre binds trace minerals and preventing their absorption
The daily intake of Total Dietary Fibre (TDF ) is 25 – 40 gm / day
or
The Total Dietary Fibre is 12 gm – 14 gm / 1000 k cals energy.
Prevention is Better than Cure
Through Dietary Fibre we can prevent CHD , Diabetis Mellitus and
cholesterol levels.
Obesity , Constipation and Diverticulosis.
